Zombie plague is never EXPLAINED, forget viruses, meteors, etc
The Science:”When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth”. That’s all. No explanations. The Lore: Having no idea why the zombie plague has started adds to the confusion, panic and general creepiness of the whole situation. People will offer opinions about what caused it all, but it’s just theories – there is no hard and fast answer. Radiation, strange meteorites, government experiments, zombie masters – arse. If a film-maker cannot think of a good reason, they should leave it unexplained. |
I thought that in Night of the Lving Dead it had something to do with radiation. And viruses and radiation are often mentioned throughout Zombie stories.
In NOTLD a TV news report mentions something about radiation from some space probe, but it is not confirmed – it is just more rumour and hypothesising that adds to the general confusion of the situation
This website seems very much George A. Lore AND in Night of the Living Dead the cause is radiation. But obviously there are ELEMENTS that can’t be explained by anyone. E.G the hunger for Living Flesh.
In this movie there is an explanation for the zombification.
In NOTLD, Romero does NOT concretely point to radiation as the cause of the outbreak. It is also interesting to note that radiation, if it is to be the cause, is not mentioned in any of his other films, and would not provide explanation for the often-overlooked fact that, in Romero’s world, anyone who dies will come back: they do not have to be bitten.
Written somewhere in some far away book I remember reading that Witch Doctors could create a short term Zombie by ways of some ritual. Now what if say one of these man-made shufflers was able to overcome whatever magic was holding it together either by some radically altered virus or screw-up in the ritual( witch uses cat bones instead of chicken bones)….could it sustain an exsistence similiar to your classic Zombie?
Wheter it’s radiation from outer space, alien attacks, chemical warefare, virus T or RAGE, indian graveyards or voodoo curse with powders I’d have to say it’s very very scary and entertaining as well…

Yes, it does have a reason for zombification, but they’re actually not zombies as they don’t die before reanimation.
As for voodoo zombies – yes, there are certain tribes whose Shaman perform rituals that put people in what is essentially a coma using spells and enchantments. Oh, and lots and lots of drugs. But still, it wouldn’t be a real zombie because a zombie is a human that has died prior to reanimation.

“When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth” will probably always be the best explanation around seeing as people have to die first, and being sent back from hell sounds like a pretty good way to be reanimated after death if you ask me =)

in the new diary of the dead movie, the narrator gives her theory about why the zombie outbreak got so out of hand, she said that it was panic that made it such a big deal, the fact of not knowing what was wrong. since it was shot with a bunch of college students she also said when everyone was trying to get home from college that we spend most of our lives seperating ourselves from our parents but once shit hits the fan thats the first place we run to is home, i find that so true and everyone else that has gone through teenage years should understand that too, so im sayin panic could be a good reason why the outbreak got the way it does…but i see good reason for it too, i mean people are simply waking up dead! or more like the dead people are waking up

the reason i think that no director has ever given a concrete reason for the zombies coming back is simple. they leave it open for our imagination to take control. the only thing scarier than a zombie is the imagination feeding the flames
In the Crazies the virus comes from a plane that crash landed into the river and proceeded to poison the towns water supply makin them go nuts and undead looking I dont know if i want to call the things in the crazies real zombies though
