3. Driven by HUNGER FOR ANY LIVING FLESH

A zombie is driven by HUNGER FOR ANY LIVING FLESH; human, animal, whatever.

Zombie eats a pigeon

The Science:

Zombies are motivated by one thing: the desire to consume livingflesh.  Because all zombies are dead they will ignore each other.  If a zombie happens across an old piece of meat – be it a severed limb or tin of beef – it will ignore that as well.  A zombie does not care what species its prey is as long as it is living.  Zombie instinct may value human prey as higher priority but it WILL NOT EXCLUDE NON-HUMAN TARGETS.  Thus animals are also not safe.

The Lore:

Zombie senses (sees? smells? hears?) living flesh, zombie shambles after it.  Zombie sees something hot-blooded even closer, zombie aims for that instead. If it lives – it is a target.

  1. Do zombies need flesh to stay active?

I was wondering how they get the energy to walk around and do all this shit, if they dont eat for awhile. It also says that if you sever the head it can stay alive(as in the head alone)

  2. RE: Human Flesh

In the book “The Zombie Survival Guide” By Max Brooks it states that although Zombie have a desire for Human Flesh there is no nutritional value what so ever. So at this moment in time no one knows why Zombie crave the flesh of the living. I hope this is useful.

  3. RE: Do sombies need flesh to stay active

As the previous person stated about the Zombie Survival Guide, it also mentions that they just feed. They walk around until they fully decompose and all that crap, so… yeah… But in other words with the Resident Evil zombie virus, its kinda the same case. Movie RE however, you just gotta snap their neck or shoot them in the head.

  4. RE: Human Flesh

Yes, zombies don’t get nutritional value from flesh *although* one could make the point that by eating live flesh they may also be absorbing liquids. If so then this may keep its dead flesh more moist and therefore slower to dry out, crumble and become dust. So in a way, eating live flesh is prolonging the zombie’s “life”.

  5. RE: Human Flesh

More moisture would make the flesh more prone to decomposition. Take mummies for example: the dry desert climates kept them intact (more or less) for hundreds or thousands of years. On the opposite end of the spectrum, a body exposed to moisture will keep biotic functions, such as decomposition, going as long as possible.

  6. Thirst For Blood?!?

I think the reason zombies want living flesh is the fact that it also contains liquid blood. I would think thirst would be just as strong as an urge as eating. Which is more important for humans, thirst or hunger? People have lived a long time without anything to eat as long as they have water.

  7. Hunger at night

Zombies are always hungry, night / day / winter / summer…in the film Dead Meat they are seen sleeping at night, but zombies don’t really sleep. They are less active when there’s nothing to interest them; i.e. food, but they don’t siesta.

  8. brains

do zombies hunger for flesh or brains, the only thing i have heard them say is brains, in zombie slur that is, but have seen them eat just about any part of the body, so i guess my real question is whats the zombies favorite part?

  9. the not so fun answer

Zombies are the embodyment of death. Slow, gradual, enevitable. The reason it is so scarry that they eat flesh is because it the most basic fear of all living things. That of being consumed.
Without some supernatural event, biological reasons fall apart. Maybe Nanomites programed to control humans might work. Invading the systems and controlling them. That would explain why a shot to the head would kill them since it would destroy te central nevous system and stop control. It also would explain the survival of severed heads.

  10. craving flesh is beside the point

After reading Brooks’ Zombie Survival Guide, I couldn’t help but think that the real reason Solanum-reanimated zombies attack people is to provide a new breeding ground for Solanum. The virus is intent on reproducing at all costs, so it drives zombies to attack more people. but it’s an on/off switch, so it can’t tell the zombie “one bite and one bite only”. It should function like any other virus (ebola, etc.)

  11. th point of eating flesh

ive watched enuff zombie movies to figure out tht if th phenomenon is, in fact caused by a virus, the reason tht zombies will hunger for human flesh but will not attack animals unless confused or not distracted by humans. th point of th craving for flesh is to spread th virus, yes animals will be attacked less but every account of zombie attacks on animals is simply a glitch in th zombie virus

  12. Just started playing a Zombie RolePlayin

recently started playing a Zombie Roleplaying game. One of the things out game master want us to do before the next session, was to find out why zombies crave flesh & brains. I am trying to figure it out. Any good suggestions would be helpful. I think it has something to do with the smell of living flesh or flowing blood that makes zombies attack.

Please let me know what you all think.

    Thanks!
    Kim

  13. Why Zombies Crave Flesh?

My 2 cents worth is this. Zombies equal humans minus *humanity* – humanity being everything that makes us human; i.e. reasoning, emotion, intelligence. What you have left is the most basic of instincts – hunger. Add to this a zombie’s residual memory of their former alive state to explain how they’re drawn to living humans. Insatiable Hunger + Lure of the Living = zombie flesh eaters.

  14. hmm

in resident evil lore, T-Virus reanimates dead cells, thus in this case when ppl say well the body will decay, not neccesarily die or decay because the cells regenerate. The hunger for flesh is only driven by the basic urge of hunger. Basically zombies in this case are just savage animals. With no basic moral control.

  15. Zombie diets

If zombies need to consume blood as they have a need for liquid then wouldnt they just drink nearby water? Additionaly the need to consume flesh might not be a nutritional but a more purley destructional urge aimed at humans. Mayby an exagerated antisocial response?
If zombies do have a kind of nutrtional need to consume flesh then that would mean they have some sort of metabolism and body repair going on within them. In turn meaning they are not dead ?Also it would mean if they eat enough flesh they would have to excrete it at some point or they would eventually explode.

  16. Why do ZOMBIES feed on human flesh?

Why do ZOMBIES feed on human flesh?

I have always wondered about the reason behind a zombies hunger for flesh and am no closer to figuring it out. Personally I believe it’s taking the piss when there is no reason.

A zombie (living dead) is a paradox in itself. For starters, they do not gain any kind of nutritional value from flesh so they have no reason to eat it, yet they do. The basic urge to feed doesn’t fit because if it did then any source of food, human to be exact would be enough. Blood in the flesh so that the zombies can moisturize their rotting flesh can’t be a reason since self preservation doesn’t exist in a zombies character and doesn’t take precedent over the urge. Demonic influence can’t fit since the zombie being appears to be a product of viral not spiritual. In this list of things what I came to realise is the whole zombie genre is bullshit. It causes a lot of questions with not answers. This all pretty much started with the George A. Romero movies and has since then spread into other genres, and like all zombie movies the same problem and question is repeated…

…why do zombies feed on human flesh?

And looking at the list of reasons above, you see no reason for them to eat human flesh since they gain no nutrition, have no sense of preservation and have no representations of demonic influence.

  17. the reason

There are a few things that separate the living dead from the normal dead, and eating human flesh is one of them. It is part of their cultural heritage. If they didn’t stumble along, moan and eat flesh they would be mistaken for normal deads as opposed to the living variety of deads. You got to keep some distinctives

  18. RE: why do ZOMBIES feed on human flesh

You make a good point, it did start with George A. Romero movies and like the zombie infection itself, has spread ever since, inducing itself from horror to mystery, western even into comedy, but there is fact in along with the hollywood fiction, fact being that cajun voodoo priests did make spells and powders to be mixed in to the targets drink that would give them a zombie like state (slow movement, pale pasty skin, moaning) the hunger for flesh however is just hollywood hype, zombies are real but even with magick theres no way to animate a dead body, even with necromancy which doesn’t envolve raising the dead. If anyone would like to discuss this with me spend an email to Bothic@gmail.com

  19. Why not nutrition?

In all of the guesses everyone has ruled out nutrition. But I have to ask why. Isn’t it possible that certain proteins and chemicals could only be found in living flesh?
For example oxygenated blood. Oxygenated blood is critical for our muscles to function properly. With out oxygenated blood muscles wouldn’t be able to move after a period of time because of toxins that would have built up. Doesn’t matter what the brain says, no oxygen in the blood means no go for the dead.
Is it possible that the lungs have failed to do their job and now living flesh provides critical nutrients for the zombie body? No need for the bathroom as a zombie leaks fluids through its various wounds and natural decaying process.

  20. The REAL FACT.

Zombies are just MADE to eat flesh. THAT’S RIGHT MADE. Since the first movie the only reason zombies were created were for horror. Which is why they make them eat flesh. If not there would be no point of making them up in such nonense. The closet things to zombies are voodoo zombies, poor souls that are forever serving their masters. So no. There is no real need. Remember they are in horror films for a reason and this is why.

  21. lashell

All I want to. Know is does zombies really exist and has it been any outbreak. And where. before
