Upcoming Zombie Films...and books, comics, games, etc.
  • Survival of the Dead
Romero's next one. Appears to be in the Diary of the Dead universe; this time set on an island off the Delaware coast occupied by two families, one of which wants to eradicate the zombies (or “Deadheads”), the other wants to lock them up and wait for a cure. Matters are complicated further when renegade Colonel Crocket (from Diary of the Dead) shows up with his outlaw soldiers.
  • Lifeless: The Series
A global pandemic has decimated the population and left the cities deserted. When a handful of survivors find themselves stranded in the aftermath, with the dead returning to life, they must rely on each other to live in a world overrun by the walking dead. Lifeless is an episodic drama developed to be devoured by the world via television and the web.
  • The Dead: Kingdom of Flies [comic]
Most of Britain has fallen to an invasion of zombies. There is no escape from their insatiable appetite for living flesh. But in Oxford, city of the dreaming spires, an unlikely alliance between a crew of firefighters and a pair of misfit soldiers has allowed them to survive. Now, with the city virtually overrun, it's time to strike back!!
Writer Alan Grant and artist Simon Bisley with Glenn Fabry are big noises in UK comics, doing a lot of 2000AD and Judge Dress stuff. Now they're turning their hands to the Zombie Plague.

  • Island of the Dead
Romero's new one. Land of the Dead disappointed, Diary was better but still stumbled, will Island get it right? This time a community of survivors are up on an Island, but instead of offing their dead relatives they're keeping them locked up in the hope of unzombifying them.  Sounds like the end of Sean of the Dead. Tentative release date of autumn 2009

  • Resident Evil Extinction
The Resident Evil films are a bit shaky aren’t they? Hell, the second hardly had any zombies in it all! Well here’s the third and reputedly final of the series. The world’s population is pretty much wiped out, Alice is holed up in an enclave in the desert, the Umbrella Corporation need her to create a serum, a bunch of other survivors are heading for safe haven in Alaska. And there’s loads of zombie crows in it.

  • Zombie Girl (Comic)
Zombie Girl is a manga-ish style comic created by Todd Myzia featuring the rabbit-ear wearing, 3 foot five zombie slayer Morganna Moon. ZG’s world overrun by the walking dead features such intriguing characters as Necroman – superman, zombified - Dr. Jorge V. Romano – zombie expert, as well as werewolves, vampires plus - if you’re eagle eyed enough - the odd horror celeb cameo. It's not exactly hardcore, so may not satisfy the purist gorehounds, but it's fun.

  • Cell
Based on Stephen King’s 2006 novel, Cell is about a pulse sent apparently randomly via mobile phones that turns the recipients into flesh eating zombies. A gorier offering than his recent stories, this book garnered fairly positive reviews. We can only hope it translates to the screen better than most of his horror novels. The book itself is dedicated to George Romero.
  • Deadscapes
The zombie apocalypse will be serialised. Deadscapes charts the familiar course of the survivors of the zombie plague – this time dramatised in half-hour instalments.

It’s an independent offering from Kristofer Velasquez, that compensates its lack of bucks with bags of enthusiasm and devotion, and an admirable, ZombieLore-pleasing strict adherence to traditional zombie conventions – hell, Velasquez even has George Romero’s signature tattooed on his arm. Admirable.

  • Diary of the Dead
George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead. Student horror film-maker wannabees document the zombie outbreak in the 5th film of Romero's Dead World.
  • World War Z
Recounts the story of the 10 years following civilisation's devastation by a zombie plague from a number of different viewpoints around the world. Based on the not yet published book by Max Brooks, author of the Zombie Survival Guide.
  • The Zombie Hunter's Bible

How to guide book for zombie hunters.

  • Grind House / Planet Terror

New project from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, this is actually two 60 minute films bundled together with an intermission and fake movie adverts in-between. Tarantino’s half is a slasher called Death Proof but the more interesting Rodriguez half is a “really violent” zombie film called Planet Terror. Puts me in mind of From Dusk ‘til Dawn. Could this be the first ever good, big-budget zombie film?

    Realease date: Easter 2007

    • Directed By: Robert Rodriguez
    • Starring: Michael Biehn (Hooray), Tom Savini (Hooray), Rose McGowan, Josh Brolin, Jeff Fahey, “Fergie” out of the Black Eyed Peas (Boo)

  • Awaken the Dead

A Zombie virus grips the country and two desperate and disparate individuals – a reformed assassin turned priest and an ex-hooker – battle to reach a safe house they were alerted to by a mysterious red letter. Joining them on their journey is an intriguing cast including a Jehovah’s Witness, a pimp and a couple of Asian school girls. Dark humour, themes of redemption and shedloads of gore abound.

Reminds me a bit of the Glen Fabry “Preacher” comic novels – not a bad thing - about a post-apocalyptic gun toting man of the cloth.

  • Worse Case Scenario

A group of American tourists encounter Nazi Zombies on a North Sea island - against a backdrop of a war between Holland and Germany.

This intriguing Dutch production has been stuck in development hell since 2003. It certainly looks impressive; fantastic visuals and really high production levels, you can see where the money’s gone.

Not sure about the rather jingoistic anti German theme of the trailers but they are still well worth the large download – let’s hope they help secure a decent enough budget to do them justice. Oh, and they are after a cast of thousands of zombies so if you want to be an extra – just sign up on the website to become a Gorehound Guerilla. Official Website:

  • Zombies / The Children
A bereaved family moves into a remote run down cabin to start a new life after the death of the father. This cabin is situated near an old mine where a load of children were killed years ago. Rumours of ghostly, flesh eating apparitions abound….

This film is interesting for two reasons:

    • Originally Tobe Hooper of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist fame was due to direct, though he has now been replaced with the rather less famous J.S.Cardone
    • A fantastic, creepy poster is associated with this project featuring zombie kids advancing out of the dark and mist. This is bound also to change since it features Hoopers name

  • Last Rites of the Dead

"In 2006 the Dead are through just lying around"

Indie zombie release from the people who brought us Strange Things happen at Sundown. The plot concerns warring militia groups made up of the living and the walking dead.

    • Director: Marc Fratto

    • Starring: Gina Ramsden, Joshua Nelson, Christa Macnamee
    • Special FX: Anthony (SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER) Pepe
    • Release Date: April 2006

  • Plane Dead

    "Fly the Deadly Skies"

Zombies on a plane. A naughty scientist has snuck a zombie-infected body onto a trans-atlantic flight. Plane hits turbulance, zombie gets loose, passengers get zombiefied, plane is refused permission to land anywhere.

    • Director: Scott Thomas
    • Starring:  David Chisum, Kristen Kerr, Kevin J. O’Connor

  • Fido
A comdedy zombie shocker this, in the tradition of Shaun of the Dead.  1950's USA and society has dealt with the zombie phenomenon by the use of a controlling collar that allows zombies to become our servants.

    • Director: Andrew Currie
    • Screenplay: Robert Chomiak & Andrew Currie & Dennis Heaton
    • Stars: Carrie Anne Moss, Billy Connolly, Dylan Baker

  • Land of the Dead 2
Follows the survivors of Land of the Dead as they head north in Dead Reckoning to the "safety" of Canada.

Night of the Living Dead 3D
The second remake of the original 1968 black and white Romero classic - this time with the twist that it is in 3D.

    • Director: Jeff Broadstreet
    • Screenplay: Robert Valding
    • Stars: Brianna Brown, Sid Haig

    - not exactly big names, Sid Haig was in House of 1000 Corpses.

3D technology is red & blue anaglyph - which means you'll need those red and blue glasses.

  • Day of the Dead - Remake
This appears to be a sequel to Zach Snyder's 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, rather than a remake of Romero's 1985 third in series.  It's all a lot of rumours at the moment but the success of the Dawn remake would seem to make such a sequel at least feasible.

  • Red State
Here is a new independent, zombie film which is set for an Internet release at the end of October 2005.  Zombie apocalypse hits a Texas suburb and it's chocolate karo syrup / blood effects all round.  Looks fun.

  • Zombie Honeymoon

Newlywed and newlydead.  This most unusual story follows the descent into zombie-ism of the husband of a honeymooning couple after he is attacked and bitten by one of the undead - and how the blushing bride deals with the inevitable bloody consequences.

Clearly this is something of a departure from the usual zombie apocalypse fare.  Horror? Comedy? Satire? All the above?  Low budget and surely destined for cult status, the vigour and enthusiasm of the writer/director/producer, Dave Gebroe, is impossible to ignore.  Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the film is inspired by the death of the director's brother in law - on honeymoon in a surfing accident.

Any other general zombie related goings on.

  • Return of the Living Dead 4 & 5

The first two sequels to the fantastic Return of the Living Dead were pretty dull affairs.   Here's two more simultaneously made parts; "Necropolis" and "Rave to the Grave" hoping to readdress the balance.  Zombie reanimation chemical "Trioxyn-5" (it was "Trioxin 245" in the original) is back again and is at the root of sinister experiments at the Hybratech corporation in Necropolis, and causing havoc on a university campus in Rave.

  • 28 Weeks Later
Sequel to the highly successful 28 days later.  Set - as you might expect - half a year after the events of the original in a human-free Britain.  I thought all the "zombies" starved to death though?

  • Last Rites

  • Day of the Dead: Contagium
This is a strange one.  Despite it's name, DOTDC is not really connected to Day of the Dead (itself, the third Dead film), more it takes place in a parallel universe to Day of the Dead.  Seems the makers had the rights to the name only but Romero himself, amongst others, is not pleased his franchise is being subverted.  Sounds like they ought to change the name of the film (and spell "Contagium" right while they're at it).  All this doesn't sound promising, but the stills that have appeared look interesting.

  • Risen
Sam and Jenny Mills drop off their daughter at Grandma's house hoping for a quiet evening alone. Instead, Sam's brother Nick shows up shattering their quiet evening. Their time alone goes from bad to worse the next day as an apocalypse of the undead erupts to tear the city apart.  Now they must risk their lives fighting through a city overrun by the flesh eating walking dead to find their daughter. When the dead rise, some things are more important that survival.

    Official Risen Website

  • Dead Centre
London-based, ultra low-budget shocker.  "Part homage to the "ugly" carbuncles of urban Britain and part undead carnage. It's zombies and angled concrete; Clockwork Orange meets Dawn of the Dead."

    Official Dead Centre Blog

  • Dead Meat
Irish zombie film.  A diseased cow escapes slaughter and manages to infect the countryside. Instead of getting mad cow disease the people in the surrounding area are turned into flesh eating zombies.

    Offical Dead Meat website

  • Land of the Dead
Set many years after "Day" and zombies have taken over the world leaving those still alive confined to a barricaded city.  Protected by walls, rivers and "Dead Reckoning" - a heavily armoured war wagon - the city is divided between the privileged (and increasingly resented) leaders in their fortified skyscrapers above and mob rule in the streets below. Outside the city, the zombies are getting cleverer...
